Fundamentals of Fire Investigation

The IAAI MA State Chapter hosts Fundamentals of Fire Investigation

This 40 hour tested course is designed to provide the new fire investigator with the prerequisite knowledge necessary to properly determine the origin and cause of a fire and to refresh the experienced fire investigator with his/her current knowledge base as it relates to the scientific investigation of a fire scene. This course provides the basis for the IAAI Fire Investigation Technician designation.

CFITrainer.Net® Modules Prerequisites:

  • The Scientific Method for Fire and Explosion Investigation
  • Understanding Fire Through the Candle Experiments
  • Fire Investigator Scene Safety

Prerequisites are required as supporting knowledge for the class and the examination. Materials within the class and examination will reference all Pre-Requisites.

Course Fees:

  • Member: $590.00 USD
  • Non-Member: $765.00 USD

All IAAI courses are subject to cancellation or postponement at any time due to unforeseen circumstances. Registered participants will be notified as soon as possible.

Notice:

Photos and testimonials collected during this course may be used for IAAI promotional purposes, including the website and social media.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:

Cancellations received 31 days or more prior to the course start date are eligible for a full refund of the registration fee.

Cancellations received within 30 days of the course start date are non-refundable.

Registrants who are unable to attend may, at the discretion of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), substitute another eligible individual from the same organization, provided written notice is received prior to the course start date.

Failure to attend a course without prior written cancellation (no-shows) will not be eligible for a refund.

Substitute or Alternatives to IAAI Curriculum 

 

Effective May 1, 2025, any non-IAAI training courses claimed by an applicant for credit towards an IAAI certification, credential, and/or endorsement, must be expressly pre-approved by the IAAI as a substitute or alternative to the IAAI’s foundational core training courses. This includes courses relating to training and certifications for:

·     IAAI-Fundamentals of Fire Investigation

·     IAAI-Motor Vehicle Fire Investigation

·     IAAI-Marine Fire Investigation

·     IAAI-Expert Witness Courtroom Testimony

Applicants who have already obtained a Fundamentals of Fire Investigation certificate or other certificates within the curriculum of Fundamentals of Fire Investigation from other sources than what is outlined above, may use this as the requirement for their IAAI-FIT or IAAI-CFI application prior to January 1, 2026.

Beginning January 1, 2026, only the IAAI Fundamentals of Fire Investigation class will be accepted for this requirement, unless the submitted course is listed on the current list of approved courses at www.firearson.com. A copy of the current procedure for approval, and link to the online application are available at www.firearson.com Fees for Course Vetting are outlined in the full policy.

Approval Process for Non-IAAI Courses:

·     Application must be submitted by the instructor, host agency or course coordinator

·     Final approval by IAAI-Certifications and IAAI-Training & Education Committees

·     Application must be submitted online at least 30 days in advance

Applications must contain all required documentation, including:

·     Comprehensive training syllabus

·     Advertising material, course outline, presentation and lesson plans

·     Dates, locations, instructor CVs

·     Total training hours and breakdown per NFPA 1033 JPR
