Topics: Electric Vehicles: Systems, Infrastructure, and Fire Investigation Considerations
This course provides a foundational overview of electric vehicles (EVs) and their supporting infrastructure, including battery systems, charging equipment, and common failure mechanisms.
Students will become familiar with the terminology and concepts necessary for accurate report writing, scene documentation, and communication with stakeholders.
The program will examine the unique challenges associated with electric vehicle incidents and discuss recommended investigative approaches and scene management considerations. Participants will also learn strategies for collaborating effectively with municipal fire departments, towing and recovery personnel, manufacturers, and private industry partners.
To enhance learning, the course incorporates photographs, videos, and case studies from recent and ongoing investigations, providing students with practical insights into real-world incidents involving electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Speaker: Joseph S. Herzberg - Fire Origin & Cause Investigator | Instructor Owner, Fire Investigation Training Group LLC
Joseph S. Herzberg is a nationally recognized Fire Origin & Cause Investigator and Instructor, bringing over 30 years of experience in fire service, investigation, and professional training. He began his career in 1989 with the Bordentown Township Fire District (NJ), where he spent 24 years advancing through leadership roles such as Fire Lieutenant, Fire Marshal, and Fire Captain. In his last position, he served as the senior career officer, managing three shifts and overseeing both a squad and ladder company. Mr. Herzberg retired in 2012 following an injury sustained in a structure fire.
Since 2014, Mr. Herzberg has focused on transportation-related fire investigations, completing more than 1,000 vehicle fire investigations involving passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, and heavy equipment. He is currently affiliated with Atlantic Professional Services.
As the owner and lead instructor of Fire Investigation Training Group, Mr. Herzberg provides advanced, courtdefensible fire investigation training to public and private organizations throughout the United States and internationally. He is also a certified Instructor and has taught for the IAAI within their vehicle fire program. His training programs have been delivered to the following organizations:
- New Jersey State Division of Criminal Justice
- State, and regional IAAI chapters
- Local and County associations
- National IAAI training programs
Mr. Herzberg previously served on both the New Jersey and IAAI Board of Directors and remains active in the profession through education, consulting, and expert analysis.
